I grew up in a small Texas town, pop. 817.
I remember when only the most ignorant of hillbillies believed in a "literal" interpretation of the Bible. My, how we've declined.
The contention that the Mayan Calendar predicts the apocalypse for 2012 is more a cultural artifact of western civilization than a Mayan prediction. Many Mayan elders believe that the end of this part of the great cycle is an energetic opportunity to redefine the colonial relationships that have marked the most recent Baktun. We should focus on the creative possibilities of a new cycle, which creates a more grounded unity and solidarity than the fearmongering of the apocalyptic junkies.
