The word apocalypse is used to refer not only to the Christian story of the end of the world, but to any catastrophic upset. But in fact, the word 'apocalypse' comes from the Greek apokalyptein, meaning "uncover" or "reveal."
The Book of Revelation, the last book of the Christian scripture, is also known as the Apocalypse of John.
