Yesterday, I reported that hell had frozen over because I agreed with an email missive from the American Family Association about demanding accountability on our massive economic woes. Well, that was yesterday. Hell has again thawed and is as flaming hot as ever.
Today’s email screed from the AFA is all about fear, fear, fear, and just when you think of pushing the plate away, more fear is forced down your throat. As the email begins, Don Wildmon makes the astute observation that this election is critical to the future of our nation. Okay, we agree so far, but it falls apart in the next line:
If the liberals win, then our foundation will no longer be based on the traditional Judeo-Christian morality.
As someone who is admittedly liberal, but at the same time a Christian, I’m puzzled, and rightly so. I like to think that I am a moral person—someone who comes by that morality because I follow a man named Jesus who instructed me to love my neighbor and treat them as I would like to be treated. Wildmon makes it seem like there are wild bands of liberals roaming the streets, raping and pillaging the closest gated community they can find of their “Judeo-Christian morality.” I shudder at the thought.
But it doesn’t stop there. Wildmon is just getting cranked up.
We will keep seeing a gradual and growing hostility toward people of faith, especially Christians. The morals of our nation will continue to decline. Our children and grandchildren will pay the price.
Again, as a Christian this puzzles me. I have felt much hostility from other Christians, but I have felt very little hostility because of my Christianity. Usually, the hostility is directed at my sexual orientation—and then I’m told that I can’t possibly be Christian because of it. Well, not their kind of Christian anyway. But apparently if Obama is elected, it’s the end of Christianity and the children will suffer. Again, I get chills.
But, just in case you’re panicking right now because of Wildmon’s end of the world scenario—he seeks to calm his readers by assuring them he’s not a “the sky is falling” type of person—in fact, he’s quite reserved, as the next paragraph completely disproves:
Yes, if the liberals win you will lose some of your religious freedoms and free speech rights. Churches and pastors will not be exempt. You will not be allowed to say certain things about a particular group. Every item of the homosexual agenda will be approved. All the laws protecting the unborn will be wiped away.
And your teenage daughters will suddenly become pregnant and we’ll all get terrible hangnails and bad teeth.
Who are these people? Perhaps a better question may be: who are these people that believe this utter tripe and open their wallets when they read it? I have never seen a liberal advocate for curbing speech, and I have distinctly heard both sides in this election say that they oppose same-sex marriage. As for abortion, it seems the Democratic side has even moderated its position in the party platform.
I know that fear is one of the most effective tactics to raise money—and lead nations to needless war—but this is just over the top and breeds nothing but divisiveness, fear and hatred of the “other.”
I know Don will enjoy spending the money it drives into his coffers, but I don’t once recall Jesus stooping to such fear tactics to try to win people to his position. But, then again, Jesus wasn’t wealthy and the powers-that-be nailed him to a cross for his trouble. In the long run, I can see why Don and his pals don’t really care to follow such an example.
