Austin Lee Steelman

A former litigator with a J.D. from Harvard Law School, Austin Steelman is currently a PhD candidate in Stanford University’s Department of History. His in-progress dissertation, Paper Gods: The Bible, the Constitution, and the Evangelical Revolt Against Modernity, 1923-1986, uncovers a fused ideology of biblical inerrancy and constitutional originalism that formed in the 1920s Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy and spread to enable the long rise of the Evangelical Right in 20th century American politics and culture.
