John O'Brien

John O’Brien is assistant professor of sociology in the social sciences division at NYU Abu Dhabi, where he teaches classes on ethnographic field methods, religion, culture, and Islam and Muslims. His articles on identity, religion, music, stigma, and American Muslims have been published in the journals Sociological Theory, Poetics, Social Psychology Quarterly, and Contexts. He is the author of Keeping It Halal: The Everyday Lives of Muslim American Teenage Boys (Princeton University Press, 2017).
