Leave it to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders to muster the fortitude to stage an almost 9-hour filibuster against the Obama-Republican tax cut deal.
And this was no simple time-waster phonebook reading but a comprehensive narrative indictment of the fraud, greed, excess, income inequality, and massive debt legacy (built by my Baby Boomer elders, inherited by my kids) that constitute US economic reality.
Which may make Sanders, in religious terms, the Jeremiah of our moment: the Old Testament prophet called to tell it like it is, even if that meant prophesying doom.
Here is Jeremiah 6:13: ”From the least of them even unto the greatest of them everyone one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.”
Other prophetic comparisons, anyone?
