First U.S. Visit of the Virgin Mary Confirmed in Wisconsin

…st centuries. That’s why, for the most part, you’ve never heard of them. Bishops, archbishops and the Vatican do serve as arbiters of hundreds of sightings and miracles each year, addressing and mediating a steady stream of beliefs that arise around the world. Since the creation of new criteria for Marian apparitions in 1978, hundreds of sightings have been studied, and at least 12 were formally approved as of 2008—according to most numbers (altho…

“The Gift of Gay”: Father Matthew Kelty, Confessor to Thomas Merton, Dies at 96

…watchword at Gethsemani; and even a cursory walk through the Abbey’s gift shop today demonstrates how many of the monks have taken up Merton’s call to creativity in the written and visual arts. Father Matthew Kelty was no exception, though he came to his creativity slower than most. Like Merton, he left Gethsemani for a time; unlike Merton, he always intended to return. He spent three years (1970-1973) with a small Cistercian community in Oxford,…

Paranoia Over Foreigners in Egypt Eclipsed by Cooperation

…ough the charitable support of someone in the crowd, or donated by the tea-shop owner – its just another part of the Egypt I have always known. But the Egypt I have known would never have seen people feeling free to voice their criticisms of the president so strongly or openly – that type of attitude certainly existed prior to this uprising, but was limited to private meetings, or outside of Egypt. In that Square, while it is still the same countr…

Romania’s “Witch Tax”: Magic Meets Bureaucracy

…and raised concerns that disgruntled witches would flee Romania and set up shop in western EU nations. The shopkeepers are mostly not Saudi, so they detect an accent, but usually think I’m Egyptian, the dialect I use the most. Anyway, by now I hope you see that it helps always to have a plan. Today, I encount…

Despite the persecution, he has conti…

Ihram: Dressing for the King

I think I’m about done with shopping for clothes to wear on hajj. Yesterday two “hajj” outfits arrived by Fed Ex. These were put away in the closet with the three I bought in Indonesia, just before Ramadan began. Technically the ihram, “sacred dress” for hajj is limited to what is worn by the men. They have two plain white clothes (about the size of a beach towel) which they wear. One piece is wrapped around their lower half, like a sarong or ski…

Glenn Beck Takes on Liberation Theology

…dite modes of engagement, we slouch uncomfortably into our favorite coffee shop couch while, despite our deepest wishes, their game goes on. Sometimes, however, these propagandists strike a nerve so close to home that not responding seems the greatest injustice. Last Tuesday, Glenn Beck dedicated an entire episode to attacking liberation theology and one of its greatest proponents, James Cone. Linking Cone’s groundbreaking Black Theology and Black…

Talking Religion at 30,000 Feet

…tells the story of the time he was reading Isis Unveiled in a local coffee shop. He was approached by a very excited man with an interest in Theosophy and other sorts of New Thought systems who talked his ear off for an hour. My friend is Catholic and was reading the book as a bit of research for some project or another. The encounter between my Catholic friend and the enthusiastic Theosophist sums up why I feel uncomfortable on airplanes. I don’t…
