In re: this, I have to wonder what Republicans would have to say to a president who was baptized and became a member of a church only late in life, who told his closest religious advisor, “I don’t believe the American people are going to follow anybody who’s not a member of a church,” who covered up his unusual religious background, and who — despite his “deeply held religious faith” and acts of public piety — was described as “a very fervent believer in a very vague religion”?
Would they not say, “Hello, Mr. Eisenhower”?
