Pseudo-Historian David Barton in the Times and on The Daily Show

…vor with the tea party, Barton was the subject of a fluff piece in the New York Times followed by an interview with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show (video below, after the jump). Barton’s slipperiness was evident in both, though only Stewart seemed plainly frustrated by it. Those of us who write about Barton have been busily dissecting his appearances and Right Wing Watch has posted a great multipart analysis here. Rather than explore the disagreeme…

Who’s ‘Really’ Jewish: the Sefardi Floridian, the Ashkenazi Californian, or the New York Jew By Choice? ‘Authenticity’ is a Trap

…s more authentic, the Sefardi Floridian, the Ashkenazi Californian, or the New York Jew By Choice? Is it more authentic to gamble with a dreidel on Chanukah (or is it Hanukkah?) despite millennia of prohibitions against gambling, or for a rising Bat Mitzvah to chant from the Torah despite the taboo of such female-identified leadership for much of Jewish history? Is a German drinking song a more authentic melody for the hymn Adon Olam than “Take Me…

“I Am Gay” Billboard Causes Stir in New York

A billboard in Schenectady, New York is raising the ire of church and community members. The billboard itself, though, is rather tame. It features three black men and one black woman in a classic family pose. The words inform passersby: “I am gay. And this is where I stay.” The billboard makes it clear that black gay people have been part of the Schenectady community for some time. Those who came to the city council meeting to protest the billboa…

As Allison Kilkenny pointed out on AlterNet, “perhaps such ignorance should be expected from the woman who stood on the House floor and declared that the threat of manmade global warming doesn’t make sense because “carbon dioxide is a natural byproduct of nature.” Kopplin, a Louisi…

Pro-LGBT Evangelical David Gushee: “I’m With You and the Church Needs to Change.”

…h Gushee and Merritt would be the first to say that Merritt wasn’t exactly breaking news. After all, for anyone who has followed Gushee’s work, the revelation that he supports “covenanted same-sex relationships for Christians” was no surprise. He’s been coming to this position over time—too slowly, he admits now, telling me, “I’m not proud of how long it took me, in fact I apologize for that in the book.” The book, he says, isn’t about marriage or…

The ‘White Lie’ Connecting Trump’s Pardon of Arsonists, Immigration Fiasco, and Charlottesville

…Kelley has shown in the example of the destruction of public play areas in New York in the 1990s. As these performative moves reveal, America is a White space, and public spaces are sites of impromptu and systematic ritualized take-backs—land grabs writ small—because Whiteness is anti-public, anti-commons, and privatizing. Indeed, even these “public” spaces are stolen spaces, as is the case in the Malheur preserve, which sits on the Burns Paiute T…

Michelle Shocked Show Shut Down After Anti-Gay Rant

…alienate her fans. As Kristin Rawls wrote in RD in 2011 (thank you to the New York Times for the reminder), the singer declared herself “the world’s greatest homophobe” at North Carolina’s Wild Goose Festival, an LGBT-friendly Christian cultural event.  Folk singer Michelle Shocked, who has in recent years publicly rejected her lesbian fan base, became incensed when asked about her “position on homosexuality” by an audience member. “Who drafted m…

The Right Questions Kamala Harris’ Blackness — Yet as Long as She Holds Any Power She’ll Always Be Too Black for Them

…got this one. At times we’re the P**i racial slur. Other times we’re the N-word. Sometimes we’re neither Black enough nor Brown enough at all. (Some predatory grifting gurus seem to think we’re all actually melatonin rich, but who can afford to sleep in this economy?) If we step aside to let our more melaninated cousins speak, we’re accused of being ashamed of our heritage. If we’re too loud about Black pride, we’re taking the limelight because we…
